Recently I was invited by LinkedIn to contribute to an article about Change Management.
Quite comments there mentioning a big failure rate, and that seems to be a common happening.
What are the reasons behind the failures?
Going for better or transformation has been a move many companies have attempted in recent years, or some are planning this to happen. If we can crack the code, we could have a bigger chance of success.
We know that as human beings, we hate changes generally. We naturally have resistance against it.
From the same behaviour science, Dr BJ Fogg’s Model 𝗕=𝗠𝗔𝗣, i.e. a behaviour happens when Motivation, Ability and Prompt occur at the same time, has some clues for us to work on.
◎ 𝗕ehaviours - required for the Change
▲ 𝗠otivation
- From the company's point of view, we usually can tick this, as Change Management has been initiated by senior leaders.
- Yet are the middle management and staff the same motivated?
▲ 𝗣rompts - Usually the Change Management programs, deadlines, or the following up by managers, peer interactions etc all could serve as prompts.
If the program was well panned out, this one is generally fine. Though it is an area worthy of examination for better results.
▲ 𝗔bility - Capable to carry out the tasks as per the requirements or better
Is the overall Change Management program practical and feasible? Are the resources sufficient to support the happening?
Had that big vision been properly broken down to actionable small bites to be carried out by different levels of the teams?
Are there small successes along the journey, to give the teams positive reinforcement to continue to carry out the ‘behaviours’? 🐾
As what Dr Fogg is famous for, behaviours can be designed in a way to happen, how can we design it in the commercial world to lead to the success of the Change Management? 🤔

With the new year just a dash away, we could use the behaviour model to design the formation of new habits, new behaviours with ourselves and others for more happiness and success in 2024! 🔶🎉
Example for fun:
❇️ Goal: Keep fit
◎ Behaviour: Exercise 1 hour each day
♣︎ Motivation: Think of a better image in more nice clothes….
♣︎ Prompts: After dinner or before breakfast, with some cheering reminder music… or the calling of an exercise pal;
♣︎ Ability: A pair of jogging shoes, or a gym membership — having them in place beforehand!
❤︎ Feel of success: Usually exercise will improve sleep quality and energy level during the day. The body will tell it’s good.
Another one we might include out of ‘designing’, is after ticking off this for 7 days for example, award oneself with a good movie, a good meal….. 😉
